The last word:
So, what do we think of this NVIDIA RTX 5070 Founders Edition?
As you’ll have gathered, performance is good, and overclocking allows us to increase performance considerably. Even though we’ve known it for several weeks, this generation of RTX 5000s won’t be the one that gives us the most satisfaction. We’ll be looking at a limited gain in terms of rasterisation performance, compared with what we’re entitled to expect from a new generation. Of course, this certainly doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to expect from this RTX 5070.
Performance :
We’re in a similar situation to the RTX 5070 Ti: performance doesn’t explode, but it’s there. We’re talking about a 21% gain over an RTX 4070 and a 6% gain over the RTX 4070 SUPER. As a reminder, the MSRP of the RTX 5070 is announced at 649 euros and that of the RTX 4070 was 659 euros. So, on paper, it’s an interesting deal, with a 21% saving for the same price. Let’s not forget, however, that when the RTX 4070 Super was released, NVIDIA also chose a price of €659. Even so, if we compare it to the previous generation, the price is not exaggerated, as it will offer better performance and new on-board technologies.
You’ll be able to take full advantage of 1440p definition, and even 2160p for certain games. Ray tracing can also be easily switched to 1440p, and the FG gives you the boost you need to get the most out of your game. The question is: “Does this RTX 5070 need Multi Frame Generation?”
Multi Frame Generation: less interesting on the 5070 (Ti)?
Highlighted by NVIDIA, DLSS 4 combined with Multi Frame Generation is the big new feature of this Blackwell architecture. Here again, some people, like myself, activate DLSS in certain games and others will never do so, oh God, never, not wanting to use ‘false’ FPS. It’s true that these are additional images created by the AI, but as the name suggests, anything created by Artificial Intelligence will always have this ‘artificial’ side. Now, we have to admit that it works well, even better than before on the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090.
And with our RTX 5070? As with the RTX 5070 Ti, in 1440p, Multi Frame Generation never seemed necessary to us, since MFG x2, which is equivalent to FG, is more than sufficient in most situations.
So why didn’t you test Multi Frame Generation in 2160p? Quite simply because we’ve noticed that in order to maintain fluidity and a good gaming experience, it’s necessary to have a sufficient average native FPS. If we switch our RTX 5070 to 2160p with ray tracing, the number of FPS often drops to around 15/20 FPS on the heaviest games, and that’s not enough to activate MFG x4, for example. The number of FPS will of course explode, but the ratio between native and AI-added FPS is not balanced. The only solution, if you want to opt for 2160p, is to lower the graphics settings and not activate ray tracing so as to achieve an average FPS of 50/60 before activating Multi Frame Generation. Our aim in this test was to get the most out of our RTX 5070, so with the best graphics settings, and to do that we’re using 1440p.
The price: the Founders Edition is likely to attract even bigger crowds!
NVIDIA’s Founders Edition model is still likely to attract big crowds with its price of 649 euros. We’re likely to find ourselves in the same situation as for the other RTX 5000 cards, with very low stocks of the custom models and prices set to soar as a result. The other unknown factor, as we’ll discuss below, is the arrival of the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT on March 6.
Should you sell your RTX 4070 / 4070 Super?
Not yet! Your RTX 4070 or RTX 4070 Super still have some good days ahead of them. OK, so you won’t be able to take advantage of Multi Frame Generation, but as we saw above, its usefulness is fairly limited in 1440p and 2160p, so you’ll have to make concessions on graphics options. So don’t hurry, and wait, since AMD will be arriving in two days’ time with its RX 9070 (XT) cards, even if it’s still unclear what the performance will be, and more importantly, what the price will be. Now, if you have a slightly ageing configuration and want to take advantage of all the NVIDIA technologies, then yes, this could be an interesting upgrade for 1440p gaming. In fact, we’re preparing a series of new articles based on older graphics cards. Creators will also be able to take advantage of the 9th-generation encoder and a new 6th-generation decoder.
This Founders Edition RTX 5070 model will benefit from a silver award, because the price seems right compared to the previous generation, and the overclocking potential is also very interesting. We’re curious to know whether the custom cards will benefit from an even higher power limit. Custom models that respect the MSRP price will also be cards to consider. The only thing we don’t know yet is the performance and price of the RX 9070 series, which arrives on March 6. We’ll be back with a full update at the end of the week to take a look at what’s on offer and, more importantly, the prices for these mid-range models. Many thanks to NVIDIA France for making this copy of the RTX 5070 Founders Edition available.
