12VHPWR: Cablemod’s 90° adapter also melts!

After the 12VHPWR connectors that burn and melt on graphics cards and cablemod cables, it’s time for adapters. Some time ago, CableMod, a company specializing in customized PC power cables, launched 90° adapters for RTX 40 12VHPWR connectors. Already, users are complaining of melted connectors on their graphics cards. But whose fault is it?

Melted 90° 12VHPWR adapters from CableMod!

Via reddit, users have been complaining about problems with melted cablemod adapters. In fact, on the graphics card side, some connectors simply burned up, fusing with the graphics card connector… So much so that it was impossible to disconnect it.

So whose fault was it? At the start of this story, the fault lay with users who didn’t know how to connect the connector in question correctly… At least, that was the official version. Later, however, it turned out that to avoid problems, the connector had to be fully inserted into the socket. However, some Reddit users report that their adapter was fully inserted.

JayzTwoCents speaks out on the subject and provides an initial food for thought: even if the adapter is fully inserted into the CG, it can still move. Its rather substantial length, coupled with the force generated by the cable, can easily “disengage”, so to speak, the male connector. The result is weaker contact and damage to both the adapter and the graphics card. He shows this very well in his video.

Finally, knowing this, he points out that the fault can’t constantly be laid at the user’s door. The problem simply stems from questionable PCI-SIG standards. According to him, the presence of two retention clips, on the right and left of the connector, would rectify this problem. As it is, the single locking mechanism is not sufficient to lock the connector perfectly.
