Intel processors gaining ground on AMD!

According to data from Jon Peddie Research, the processor market is improving. The number of shipments is up on the previous quarter, which is good news. However, the news is not so good for AMD, as Intel processors are gaining ground.

Intel processors are giving AMD a hard time!

Processeurs Intel - marché CPU Q2 2023

The first thing to note is that the CPU market is gradually starting to recover. While the number of shipments is still low compared with the second quarter of 2022 (54 million compared with 70 million), it is on the rise compared with the first quarter of 2023. In fact, they are up by 17%, from 46 million to 54 million. Phew, light at the end of the tunnel?

In detail, laptop processors remain in the majority, accounting for 72% of the market, compared with just 28% for desktop processors. From one year to the next, this percentage remains stable, but declines from one quarter to the next, 31
u in the first quarter of 2023.

Finally, if we look at client CPUs, the bad news comes from AMD, which is seeing its market share shrink. Compared with Intel, the company is losing ground and is down by 5.3%, while the blues are up by 23%.

It has to be said that Intel is more aggressive in growth sectors such as entry and mid-range. AMD, on the other hand, is targeting the higher price segments with its AM5 platform. The most affordable CPU on this socket is priced at €260, while we have a LGA-1700 processor for just €77 at Top Achat. When it comes to motherboards, however, AMD has made great strides, with a first price AM5 accessible from around €100.

Clearly, the Reds could well counter-attack soon with new, more affordable CPUs like the Phoenix APUs. Nevertheless, we’ll have to keep a close eye on the fourteenth-generation Raptor Lake Refresh.
