Intel Battlemage: PCIe 5.0 boards for desktop only?

Also thanks to Moore’s Law is Dead, we have a few more hints about Battlemage. Clearly, this generation of graphics cards could well exploit PCIe 5.0. Similarly, there will be no dedicated mobile GPU, but we’ll come back to this point.

Battlemage: PCIe 5.0 GPUs ?!

Intel Battlemage

From what we can see on the document shared by MLID, the next generation of Intel graphics cards may well exploit a PCIe 5.0 x16 interface. Otherwise, in line with current boards, these models will exploit a so-called ” full heigh ” PCB 8″ long, or around 20.32 cm. This briefly evokes the PCB format of NVIDIA boards. Last but not least, the boards would occupy 2 slots in a PC case… At a time of ever-increasing board clutter, it’s always nice to have dual-slot models. Of course, this probably only applies to reference cards.

Otherwise, a little earlier, the document highlights a PCIe card format and indicates that there would be no mobile ” add-in video cards ” version. Don’t panic, this doesn’t mean there won’t be a mobile version – far from it. What it does mean is that Intel is burying the MXM format for notebooks.

As a reminder, this is a format we’ve come across occasionally in the past. The MXM slot simply allows you to change the graphics card in a laptop , as opposed to a GPU soldered onto the PCB. On paper, it’s interesting, but in reality, this format complicates the design of machines, cooling systems and so on. All the more so as the cards weren’t any more affordable, far from it. In short, Battlemage will be coming to laptops via GPUs and memory soldered to the motherboard.
