Intel performance downgrades to be expected!

As we saw earlier this morning, Intel is pushing for a new power consumption profile to be applied by default on motherboards. However, this would literally slash frequencies and, by rebound effect, performance. Tests have been carried out using Intel’s recommended “performance” settings, and they’re not very reassuring.

It should be pointed out, however, that the Bang4BuckPC Gamer user who conducted the tests had customized settings, which he details at the beginning of his video.

Intel: the new default profile too restrictive on performance?

Intel PL2 188W

By following Intel’s recommended settings for the performance profile (Iccmax 307A, PL2 at 253W), the frequency drops a good notch compared with the user’s everyday settings.

In tests, frequencies are therefore down, and not just a little. With Intel’s recommended settings, the drop in frequency can be as much as 17%. Compared to the 6.2 GHz boost officially announced, in practice these can fall to 5.1 GHz according to the user in question.

And if there’s an impact on performance, there’s also an impact on temperature and power consumption. In game, on Shadow of the Tomb Raider and F1 23, we lose up to 8°C in temperature and almost fifty watts in power consumption.

Now, these readings were taken based on the recommended parameters for the performance profile. Let’s remember that blue wants to set up a basic profile with PL1 at 125W, PL2 at 188W and Iccmax at 249A. Clearly, if this goes ahead as planned, Blue will slash the performance of its processors, leaving the way clear for AMD, which already dominates the Gaming CPU market with its 7800X3D.

Once again, we can only recommend that you get your hands dirty and adapt the parameters according to the capabilities of your hardware, especially the cooling system. The aim is to find the best temperature/consumption/performance ratio!
