No more nonsense: Intel wants PL2 at 188W as default profile!

Since the ninth generation of Intel processors, motherboard manufacturers have developed a bad habit. Each time a new motherboard was launched, an “Extreme” profile was proposed, or even applied by default. This profile unleashed the PL2’s power, while being much more permissive on the power limit in order to maximize performance. While all went well until the thirteenth-generation Core i, this profile seems to be the cause of many of the crashes encountered on the last two CPU generations.

In response to this, the blues indicate that the party’s over and that a new, more restrictive base profile is to be applied by default!

When you launch a high-end processor and it keeps crashing, it doesn’t look good. For this, and other undoubtedly technical reasons, the brand wants its motherboard manufacturer partners to take a step back. A new, more conservative profile is to be applied by default, with PL2 at 188W.

Some motherboard manufacturers, such as Biostar, have already begun deploying this type of profile. Nevertheless, in the coming weeks, bios updates will be offered by various brands. All this should be in place by May 31.

If you’re the kind of person who uses extreme profiles, you’re bound to lose out on performance with the new default profile. However, you’ll gain in stability and potentially in nuisance (heating, power consumption, noise). What’s more, there’s nothing to stop you switching back to an “extreme” profile if you feel like it.
