The least we can say is that the PC market and the components that revolve around it are not doing very well. This morning we told you that graphics card shipments in China have fallen by 42%. Now we learn via MindFactory.de figures that the average selling price of GCs has doubled between 2020 and 2023!
The average price of graphics cards doubles between 2020 and 2023!
What is interesting about MindFactory a German PC components reseller, is the transparency. Indeed, the store regularly publishes data related to their sales, which gives us some information on the state of the market. Here, the news is not pleasant since we learn that in three years, the average price of GPUs has doubled!
In 2020, before the crisis of Covid, GPU mining, etc., when the market was “healthy”, AMD offered its RX 5000 while at NVIDIA we had the Super versions of RTX 2000. At that time, the average selling price of an AMD card was 295.25 €. On the NVIDIA side, the average price was €426.59. These values allowed MindFactory to make sales of €442,870 with AMD against €855,305 by reselling NVIDIA cards. At least for the month of February 2020.
Currently, in February 2023, the reseller finds that the average price of AMD cards is €600.03 compared to €825.20 with NVIDIA. In percentage terms, this represents respective increases of +103% and +93.5%. While the month of February is still not over, the store achieves record sales. It announced gains of € 1,026,046 (+130%) by selling AMD against € 1,844,323.35 (+115.5%) by selling NVIDIA.
These price increases are difficult to explain by simple inflation or increased transportation costs… Or even by mining, at least not at this stage.
