AMD’s small PR stunt just before the launch of the RTX 4070

The launch of the non-Ti RTX 4070 is coming very soon, it’s only a matter of hours now. However, AMD is doing its its little PR stunt to sow doubt in the minds of gamers… Or maybe not, but we don’t believe in coincidences. Indeed, the company puts forward very VRAM oriented arguments!

For AMD, the memory capacity is worrying!

recommandation VRAM AMD

In its slides, the brand highlights the memory capacity of its cards in parallel with the amount of memory used in some recent games. It is true that games like The Last of Us Part 1, Hogwarts Legacy or Resident Evil 4 Remake are very greedy in this regard. Based on TechpowerUp’s readings, TLOU consumed 11.5 GB of memory in 1440p against 10.3 GB for Hogwarts… 14.2 GB with Ray Tracing. As for the remake of RE4, the reds indicate that the game uses 15.2 GB in UHD against 17.5 GB with Ray Tracing, still in UHD.

Consommation VRAM AMD

Clearly, in the future, we must expect games that are more and more greedy in VRAM and graphics cards will have to embed more and more memory. Already a 12GB card seems to be the minimum to play TLOU… Imagine the future AAA. Well, we also suspect Naughty Dog to have done the minimum service for the porting of its game, but that doesn’t change the facts.

It only remains to see what the next CG will offer in terms of memory capacity. Nevertheless, for the current generations, we don’t expect cards with more than 8 GB for the RX 7700/7600 and RTX 4060 desktop. Clearly, these are cards that will be limited to 1080p gaming given their memory capacity. Maybe the hypothetical future RTX 5000 and RX 8000 will do better at this level… When games will consume 14 GB in 1080p (sarcasm).
