Last of Us Part 1: expect at least a 12GB VRAM GC

Day-1, one of our members thought it would be a good idea to buy The Last of Us Part 1… Not having had the opportunity to discover it on console, it was the opportunity to play it on PC. How to say that the shower was cold? Clearly, this PC port is not clean and even on a not too shabby configuration, the game has trouble running. We’ll see how it runs concretely via TechpowerUp who made a small benchmark.

The Last of Us Part 1 : expect at least 10GB of VRAM!

The Last of Us Part 1The first cold shower concerns the amount of video memory swallowed by the game. Equipped with an RTX 4090, our colleagues measured a very high memory consumption. Thus, in 1600×900, the game pulls at the bottom word 10.5 GB of VRAM on the card. Then it goes up to 10.7 GB in 1080p, 11.5 GB in 1440p to finish at 13.9 GB in UHD, crazy.

Finally, this high demand for VRAM means that we find ourselves in crazy situations where an RTX 3060 does better than an RTX 3070. In fact, the 60 card with 12 GB displays 37.1 FPS in QHD compared to 36 FPS for the 3070. In UHD, it’s better not to ask any questions, since to reach the fateful 60 fps mark, you need to equip yourself with an RTX 4090 or an RX 7900 XTX.

By the way, we can go back to the recommended configurations for playing the game for a moment. In full HD, if you don’t have an RX 6700 XT or an RTX 2080 Ti, don’t expect to reach 60 FPS with full details. In QHD you will need at least an RX 6800 XT, the 3080 being well below with 52 FPS average. And in UHD, we know the result.

So you can easily understand that we can’t rely on the configurations recommended by Naughty Dog. Besides, don’t expect to play the game with an RX 470 or a GTX 1050 Ti, even in 720p with details at minimum, with what the game consumes, it looks bad! Out of the graphics card, don’t forget that our colleagues are running with a Core i9 13900K and 32GB of RAM.

Of course, let’s hope that Naughty Dog reacts and offers us patches to improve the performance.
