If the rumors reported by Moore’s Law is Dead are to be believed, AMD is expected to make an impressive leap in clock speed with Zen 6 compared to Zen 5. According to the site, the company is even aiming for 7 GHz—claims that stand in stark contrast to what it was announcing just recently. That’s right—in the latest reports, MLID mentioned breaking the 6.5 GHz barrier, but now we’re looking at 1 GHz higher than that. Obviously, we urge you to take these claims with a huge grain of salt, given how extreme they are.

7 GHz for Zen 7?

An “insider” reportedly reviewed internal documents:

AMD Zen 6

If we are to believe what we’re being told here, an “insider” reportedly accessed internal AMD documents and discovered that the company plans to reach 7 GHz with Zen 6. For now, it’s said that at least one processor model is expected to reach this milestone via its boost frequency, while other models are rumored to hit at least 6 GHz—which would already represent a significant increase. In fact, with the Ryzen 9000 series, we’re talking about a turbo frequency of 5.7 GHz (9950X). Moving to 6 GHz already represents a 300 MHz increase—and a 1.5 GHz jump if we want to reach 7 GHz!

A strong engineering team and TSMC’s 2-nm process!

Furthermore, it appears that the team in charge of developing Zen 6 is the same one that designed Zen 4 back then. With the Ryzen 7000 series, AMD managed to deliver a significant clock speed boost compared to the Ryzen 5000 series. In fact, the company broke the 5 GHz barrier and reached 5.6 GHz, whereas the previous generation topped out at 4.8 GHz. Another question concerns the transition to TSMC’s 2-nm process, whose potential is still unknown but which could enable potentially substantial clock speed gains. But what about the impact on temperatures and power consumption?

For now, however, we should take all of this with a grain of salt, as CPU clock speeds are bound to evolve rapidly as development progresses… Especially since the rumors spread by our friend MLID sound more like grandiose announcements whose veracity is difficult to verify.
