Configuration overview

The configuration of this Dell Alienware M16 R1 is based on an AMD Zen4 platform. The CPU used (R9-7845HXHX) has the same configuration as the R9-7900X found on desktop PCs.

The various components :

We start with the CPU, motherboard and RAM, here on CPU we can see that the M16 R1 is equipped with an R9-7845HX. For RAM, the sticks are 16 Gb for 32 Gb of RAM in total, using Sk Hynix M-die modules in single rank at 4800 Mt/s CL40. It will be possible to push RAM to 5200 Mt/s by opting for a replacement kit, as we’ll see at the end of the test. Expect to pay €125.90 for 32 Gb of 5600 Mt/s CL40 RAM and €232.90 for 64 Gb of 5600 Mt/s CL40 RAM (running at 5200CL38 here).

Let’s move on to the graphics card. This is an interesting solution on paper for a notebook PC. Indeed, the RTX 4070 mobile features specifications halfway between the RTX 4060 Ti and the RTX 4070. In terms of performance, we’re on a par with the RTX 3060 Ti to the RTX 4060 Ti.

For storage, we have a Western Digital SN810 PCIe 4.0 x4. The performance of these WD SSDs is as good as ever, as these benchmarks show.

As for the screen, we’re on a 2K IPS panel (2560x1440p) capable of reaching 350 nits.

Disassembly, repair and upgrade:

Disassembly is achieved by removing the 8 screws on the back of the device, then using plastic tools as in the ifixit kits. For any modification or manipulation, you’ll need to disconnect the battery, especially when changing the DDR5, which dies quite easily if still supplied with 5V.

A little extra when disassembling, two screws that unclip the rear panel when unscrewed, really appreciated. Disassembly takes just a few minutes.

Dell Alienware M18 R1 - démontage

From a modification point of view, we have easy access to the 2 so-dimm DDR5 slots, as well as to the 3 M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots in miniature 2230 and 2280 formats. The Wi-Fi card is also easily accessible. It should be noted, however, that the cooling system is located on the back of the motherboard, and disassembling it could prove risky. It’s also worth noting that the placement of the various components is the same as in the Alienware M18 R1.
