Sales trends for AMD motherboards in South Korea

Head for South Korea, where Danawa Research publishes sales figures for AMD motherboards. The study runs from December 2022 to November 2023, a period of almost a year. It has to be said that a lot has happened over this period… Between the launch of the AM5, the arrival of the Ryzen 7000X3D, etc., the market has moved on!

B650: the most popular motherboards!

Of course, the adoption of AM5 motherboards wasn’t immediate, since in December 2022, the B550 boards were the most popular. It has to be said that, when they arrived, AM5 boards were excessively expensive, while the sole choice of the still-expensive DDR5 was a serious brake. As a result, 46.24% of cards sold in December 2022 were B550 models, while the B650 was marginal: 2.57%.

Over time, however, DDR5 became increasingly affordable, and card prices began to fall. For these reasons, at the end of July 2023, we reach the crossroads where sales of B650 and B550 cards are at the same level. Then, in August 2023, B650 card sales take over again. By November 2023, 34.43% of AMD boards were B650.

Looking at sales by brand, we can see that there were several peaks. In January 2023, MSI dominated motherboard sales (56.45%), followed by ASUS in March 2023 (57.99%). Then all hell broke loose, with MSI back in the lead in May, June and July. Since then, Gigabyte has dominated sales since August 2023. ASRock currently accounts for 13.52% of motherboard sales.

Finally, in terms of the average price of motherboards, there has been a significant reduction in the price of B650 models, from 316,138 ₩ Korean Won (~€221) in December 2022 to 223,576 ₩ (€156.14) in November 2023. This trend obviously favors adoption of the platform. On the B550 side, prices have also fallen from 173,600 ₩ (~120 €) to 134,420 ₩ (~94 €) by the end of 2023. As for the other, more affordable chipsets, prices have remained stable overall, so it’s hard to make further savings!
