RTX 4070 Megalodon mass production begins

Back in May, we told you about Asus’ RTX 4070 Megalodon, a new graphics card. However, it’s not just a “graphics card”, as it features a new concept. It’s based on a design that requires no external power cable… But it does require a very special motherboard.

RTX 4070 Megalodon: the start of mass production?

As a reminder, this new graphics card has two connectors: one PCIe and a second just for the power supply. Indeed, even though there’s no 8-pin PCIe or 12VHPWR, an auxiliary power supply is still required. This takes place just behind the graphics card PCIe, via the GC_HPWR. The GC_HPWR is responsible for delivering the required watts to the card.

Unfortunately, this concept requires a special motherboard also equipped with this connector. To this end, the brand is also working on a motherboard from the TUF Gaming series. What’s more, it belongs to the BTF concept, which hides the connectors by moving them to the back of the motherboard. And here we realize that the GC-HPWR is no more than a “wall pass-through”, since it will require a 12VHPWR or three 8-pin PCIe to finish off the power to the graphics card.

In short, the important information to remember is that Asus is about to mass-produce these components. Production is due to start in the autumn, with sales scheduled for the end of the year.
