Framework raises 18M and wants to tackle more than just laptops

Framework has made a name for itself by capitalizing on two things: the passion of those who like to tinker with and upgrade their PCs, and the frustration of those who spend their money on repairs and wonder about programmed obsolescence. It has to be said that this success is essentially media-driven. Not that Framework isn’t a viable business, but after more than 5 years in existence, it remains a “little dwarf” in today’s laptop world. More generally, the company has grown by raising funds on several occasions, because investors believe in its project, and also because it is surfing on a “trend” that we are all aware of (recycling, repair, the planet, etc.)

Nirav Patel, CEO of Framework: “We’re a consumer company that doesn’t do AI and managed to raise funds in 2024” (TechCrunch)

Framework wants to focus on consumer electronics in general

The company’s origins lie in an initial $9 million round of financing for the original design of a 13-inch laptop, which has been used for three generations of components. In 2022, an additional $18 million was received by Framework. Funds used to launch the Framework Laptop 16. Today, it receives a further $18 million for its next expansion.

However, the company’s future does not seem to be moving away from the portable PC. The company’s CEO asserts that the Framework Laptop 13 and Framework Laptop 16 have a long life ahead of them. But the company also wants to open up to other territories. It is doing so by strengthening its teams (by the end of 2024, the Framework team will number 60 employees).

It is also doing so by forging links with other companies. Those familiar with the laptop ecosystem will know that Compal is behind much of the design of the Laptop 16. But there are other links that have become stronger in recent months. In an interview, we learn that Cooler Master, which designed the thermal solution inside the Framework Laptop 16, is now a direct investor in the company. Discussions on other products are underway, and Cooler Master could help Framework create new products. “We currently have additional collaborations with the Cooler Master team in incubation.”

Cooler Master itself is looking for other playing fields. We know he’s interested in PCs, but not just esoteric products like the SneakerX…
