Currently still in prototype form, this Asus RTX 4070 Megalodon card benefits from some good ideas that actually make good sense. The graphics card is no different from a classic GeForce RTX 4070, but it benefits from an interesting design in several respects. This 4070 features a backplate that extends beyond the PCB, with a cutout for air to pass through. The board features a dual BIOS that lets you switch between “Performance” and “Silent” modes. But the most interesting feature is to be found on the board’s PCB. In the extension of the PCIe connector, we find a new connector, which, with a compatible motherboard of course, will power the RTX 4070 and do away with the unsightly connectors we know.

At this point, it’s obviously a proprietary connector whose use could be greatly facilitated by Asus‘s enormous position in the motherboard market. The connector is designed to deliver up to 600 W of power and could be implemented on a specific series of motherboards. For the demonstration, Asus presented a Z790 TUF Gaming motherboard featuring this proprietary slot referenced on the PCB as “GC_HPWR”.

Asus plans to launch a range of products based on this concept worldwide this year. The company has stated that these new references will be slightly more expensive due to the additional manufacturing costs associated with moving and realigning the connectors on the PCB.
