Rumors surrounding a new launch of the RTX 3060 are becoming more pressing (discussed here and there) since, according to a Korean media outlet, Samsung Foundry is preparing to restart production of the card’s GPU. As a result, the new batches of cards would retain the same process. Once again, the aim behind this would be to meet the demand for graphics cards, as certain cards are difficult to find on the market due to the AI market.
RTX 3060: Samsung is reportedly preparing to restart production!
The card was originally released in 2021 and featured a GA106 GPU with a total of 3,584 CUDA cores. The chip was supported by a total of 12 GB of GDDR6 memory with a 192-bit memory bus. Subsequently, a version with 8 GB of memory via a 128-bit bus was released. Although this is not the original version, given the tense situation in the PC memory sector, it is not unreasonable to imagine NVIDIA focusing on this version. In any case, Samsung was responsible for production thanks to its 8 nm process.
Today’s news concerns the fact that the company is preparing to produce this chip again. This would not be a difficult operation, as this process is still used by the foundry for one simple reason: it is the one used to produce the Nintendo Switch 2 chip .
Of course, the aim of this move would be to meet the demand for graphics cards from gamers. Since the explosion in demand for AI from the professional sector, the price of graphics cards has risen while memory chips have become scarce. This is affecting the availability of certain models, while affordable options must continue to be offered to satisfy everyone.
Of course, we could see a very low-key launch, without excessive communication. Even though the card is now five years old, it still has some strong selling points, such as a large amount of memory and DLSS support.
