Moore’s Law is Dead has been quite chatty lately, and after covering the topic of the upcoming Zen 6 processors with a boost clock of 7 GHz, it’s now discussing the launch of the next generation of graphics cards. And according to one of his sources, who remains anonymous (and for good reason), it would be surprising if AMD didn’t launch anything in 2027. In fact, AMD might even gain the upper hand over NVIDIA in the graphics card market if the schedule holds, but this should be taken with a grain of salt.
RDNA 5: Rumors point to a 2027 launch!
A launch covering both desktop and console GPUs!
We first mentioned this timeline following discussions that took place during this year’s Computex. MLID is adding fuel to the fire with a source working at an OEM, who indicates that AMD could launch its series of graphics cards in 2027. The source says they’d be shocked if nothing happens before the end of next year. Furthermore, it’s not far-fetched to think that the company could steal a march on NVIDIA by releasing its GPUs before its competitor’s.
In any case, a 2027 launch would make perfect sense, since the RDNA 5 architecture would also be ready for future home consoles. Once again, AMD has caught the attention of Microsoft and Sony to power their upcoming PlayStation 6 and Project Helix (Xbox) consoles. Given that these consoles are expected next year, if everything is ready for home consoles, the same should hold true for desktop PCs as well.
An offering capable of competing with NVIDIA’s 90 series!
However, with these upcoming graphics cards, the lineup should be more comprehensive than with the RX 9000 series. While AMD planned to regain market share with its current series by focusing on the most promising price segments, with its next generation, the “Reds” aim to be able to compete with the entire “Chameleon” lineup. This also applies to the “Greens’” 90-series cards. The last time AMD was able to fully compete with its rival was with the RX 6000 series, where the RX 6950 XT, for example, held its own against an RTX 3090 Ti.
With the RX 7000 series, unfortunately, the “Greens” were able to go as far as the RTX 4080, while with the RX 9000 series, the company is positioned between the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 at best.
In any case, 2027 looks to be a more promising year for hardware than 2026. On the one hand, we’re expecting AMD to release its new graphics cards, but NVIDIA should finally unveil its RTX 50 Super series. On the CPU side, we’ll also see the arrival of Zen 6 and Nova Lake.
