Not long ago, Valve launched its Steam Machines, small consoles running on SteamOS. However, these consoles were powered by AMD hardware. To make the system accessible to everyone, Valve is working on compatibility with NVIDIA graphics cards. The goal is to enable full compatibility with NVIDIA GPUs rather than relying on a standard driver.

Valve wants to improve SteamOS compatibility with NVIDIA hardware!

Optimizations coming next year:

SteamOS

SteamOS is a Linux system based on ArchLinux that Valve has modified for gaming; however, these modifications are unfortunately not fully compatible with NVIDIA graphics cards. While NVIDIA graphics cards do work on the system, compatibility isn’t optimal. Furthermore, integration can be complicated, and the user experience and performance may be limited.

To address this issue, the company has reportedly assembled a team of engineers to optimize SteamOS for NVIDIA hardware. However, this is a long-term project, and the updates are not expected to arrive until next year. For now, the company is reportedly prioritizing its own devices, namely the Steam Deck and the Steam Machine.

The goal: widespread adoption of SteamOS!

Valve’s ultimate goal is reportedly to offer a system accessible to everyone, without requiring users to rely on its hardware. Ultimately, Valve appears to want to offer an alternative to Windows as a gaming operating system.

In fact, the company already has a broad ecosystem of compatible devices—we’re talking about the Steam Deck—but the Steam Machine has now joined the ranks of devices running the system, as we mentioned earlier this morning. In fact, due to the AI’s significant resource demands, prices are higher than they should be: at least €1,039… The Deck hasn’t been spared either.
