Graphics card sales are not doing well. The latest study by JPR (Jon Peddie Research) highlights a 38% drop in sales over one year. In short, a trend that is similar to that of the hard drives sector, the motherboards and the GPU sector observed in China.
The graphics card market has dropped by 38% in one year!
For the time being, the news is not good since the GPU market is experiencing its biggest dip since 2011. Indeed, in the fourth quarter of 2022 (Q4 2022), a total of 64.2 million graphics chips were sold. This represents a nice drop in shipments of 15.3% from Q3 2022 to Q4 2022. However, if you compare the numbers from Q4 2021 to Q4 2022, this drop is simply abysmal: -38% year-over-year on all types of graphics chips!
In detail, we see a 24% drop in sales in the desktop sector, sales of graphics processors for desktop PCs. On the laptop side, it’s even worse with a net drop of 43%, ouch… Is there a link between the average GPU prices doubling ? Maybe (irony).
For each of the major graphics chip makers Intel, AMD and NVIDIA we have, quarter over quarter (Q3 2022 to Q4 2022):
- AMD: -12.7
- Intel: -16.5
- NVIDIA: -11.7
However, this is not all, as it also drags the processor market down. Shipments are down 17.4% quarter-on-quarter versus 35.3% year-on-year to around 54 million units.
Finally, don’t expect a quick recovery in business. JPR predicting a growth rate of 0.19% per year between 2022 and 2026.
