Micron made a number of announcements at a funding call conference. The American company provided news on various memory-related technologies, including GDDR7. The latter indicates that it will be ready for the first quarter of 2024.

Clearly, AMD could be the first to take advantage of this new type of VRAM. Why? Quite simply because NVIDIA recently announced that there would be no new gaming graphics cards until 2025. This leaves the way clear for AMD to take the lead in this sector.

But what are these advantages? Well, quite simply, speed. We’re talking about memory speeds of up to 36 Gbps. So far, the fastest GDDR is currently exploited by the RTX 4080, which features GDDR6X at 22.4 Gbps.

Of course, faster memory also means higher memory bandwidth. So, with different buses, we get :

  • 128 bits: 576 GB/s
  • 192 bits: 846 GB/s
  • 256 bits: 1152 GB/s
  • 320 bits: 1440 GB/s
  • 384 bits: 1728 GB/s

Clearly, the benefits will soon be felt. To give you an idea, the current RTX 4060 uses GDDR6 operating at 17 Gbps, coupled with a 128-bit memory bus. Its bandwidth is therefore 272 Gb/s; with GDDR7, we’d be at 576 Gb/s, i.e. more than the RTX 4070/Ti.

So that’s what’s in store for the first half of 2024. Meanwhile, 24 Gbps GDDR6 has entered mass production at Micron, while Samsung is also working on GDDR7 and GDDR6W.
