Asus and the corrosion on its Formula, it’s not pretty !

If you are currently using an Asus Z690 Formula and have integrated the VRM block into your loop, beware. Currently, serious concerns about corrosion of the block are surfacing. Apparently, this corrosion would be linked to an incompatibility of materials: copper + nickel and aluminum + nickel.

Beware of the corrosion of the block of your Z690 Formula!

Asus Z690 OC Formula Corrosion

For the record, as the little Z690 Formula reaches ” End of Life ” status at Asus, stories of corrosion of its waterblock are surfacing. Indeed, the block used for the cooling of the power supply stages would be at the origin of the problem. The cause would be linked to the materials used. Contrary to what is imagined by the mentions “EK” and “nickel” on the the plug the brand, it would not be copper used under the nickel, but rather aluminum.

And that’s where the problem lies, because when coupled with other copper/brass/steel elements, a corrosive galvanic reaction is formed. The differences in the electrochemical potentials of the metals come into play and that’s where it gets ugly. The liquid is loaded with particles that clog the channels/blocks and can even impact the pump by blocking the blades. Moreover, this reaction can happen quickly: in about ten weeks.

The worst thing in this story is the silence of Asus and EKWB who have not made any official announcement yet. Only EK responded to a customer who bought an ” EK-Quantum Momentum² VRM Bridge ROG Maximus Z690 Formula D-RGB – Plexi ” :

EKWB Z690 FormulaBasically, the brand says that there is indeed a compatibility concern between the bridge and the motherboard block. The same goes for any other copper-based product. Furthermore, the company states that it is working with Asus on this corrosion concern to implement a replacement solution. And that if you have a problem, don’t hesitate to contact your local Asus support.

What’s funny is that the product announced as incompatible is still on sale on the EKWB. In the meantime, if you are using the VRM block of your card, we can only advise you to take it out of your mouth to avoid further damage.
