AMD to launch EPYC 4004 server processor on AM5 socket

First of all, please bear in mind that this information is still at the rumor stage and should be treated with all due caution. AMD could launch a family of processors dedicated to “consumer” servers: the AMD EPYC 4004 compatible with socket AM5. Until now, AMD has relied on the SP5 and SP6 platforms for servers. The AMD EPYC 4004 processors would therefore be Zen 4s, probably using the same “Raphael” CPU chips we’ve seen in the form of the Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 7000 X3D. Indeed, it seems that this range could include both classic processors and versions with 3D V-Cache.

EPYC 4004: server on socket AM5?

This information is perplexing, because even if the AM5 socket ensures a wide availability of motherboards for this theoretical family, there is currently no reference that is really capable of taking on professional use in a server, however small. Perhaps AMD has the idea of launching a new chipset and making this motherboard more affordable. The memory controllers on the I/O chip would probably be reconfigured to support server memory densities, in addition to the ECC support found on the Ryzen PRO 7000 series.

For the moment, no further information has been divulged on this release. We have learned, however, that the release is imminent and that the platform will be single-socket only, which seems logical given the ambition to make it an entry-level product. The target could be small NAS, intermediate WEB servers or small dedicated hosting servers.
