The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is a long-awaited processor, recently announced by AMD. In fact, while some had been preparing for its launch at CES, we’ll have to wait until the end of April to see it arrive on our shelves. In the meantime, although it made a brief appearance in stores in Canada, the official price was not known. Now David McAfee on X has revealed the model’s official retail price!

AMD’s most expensive new consumer CPU!

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2

At $899, AMD is selling the most expensive consumer CPU in its history. Previously, this title went to the FX-9590, a CPU then equipped with eight bulldozer cores. At the time, it boasted of being the first consumer CPU to break the symbolic 5 GHz barrier… But it was unconvincing, with half-hearted results compared to Intel’s Core i 4000. Above all, what this model lacked was energy efficiency, with consumption levels that were extremely high. As for the price, AMD was officially selling this FX for $799 in 2013 (prices quickly melted afterwards).

Double 3D V-Cache!

With 9950X3D2, AMD is showcasing an innovative processor featuring a dual 3D V-Cache matrix, one per CCD. Thanks to this, the CPU boasts a total L3 cache capacity of 192 MB, compared with 128 MB for the Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Moreover, the Reds seem to be changing the positioning of their chip, gearing it more towards the business and productivity sector than gaming. As a reminder, the first X3D models were particularly successful in video games.

A performance/price ratio at half-mast?

We’ll have to wait for the official launch of the CPU and the publication of independent tests/reviews before we can fully judge. However, given the price increase compared to the Ryzen 9 9950X3D (+35%) and the performance figures announced as just 7% better on average, it’s unlikely that many people will be flocking to buy this model. Except perhaps in certain specific cases.

In any case, you’ll have to be patient. However, with this CPU, AMD seems to have pushed the pots to the limit, and this is reflected in the price. Whether it’s worth the effort remains to be seen.
