Ever since we first started talking about it, and following the release of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, we were almost certain that this new Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 would arrive in Q1 of this year. That happened this afternoon with the announcement by Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD’s Computing and Graphics Group, via a video announcement.
This Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is the big brother of the big brother of the little brother. Okay, we’ll admit it’s not the simplest way to put it. AMD first launched the most powerful of its Ryzen 9000 series processors with the Ryzen 9 9950X. This was then followed by the Ryzen 9 9950X3D. This model features second-generation AMD 3D V-Cache technology, positioned below rather than above the processor cores, as was the case with the Ryzen 7000X3D.
So, what’s new with this Ryzen 9 9950X3D2?
It is the world’s first desktop processor whose two chiplets both incorporate AMD 3D V-Cache technology. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 will offer performance gains of 5 to 10% compared to the Ryzen 9 9950X3D on creative workloads (such as DaVinci Resolve or Blender) and large-scale source code compilations (such as Unreal Engine and Chromium).
It is, of course, still equipped with 16 “Zen 5” cores and a total cache of 208 MB. Availability is scheduled for April 22. However, there is no word yet on the price of this new Ryzen 9 9950X3D2.
