RDNA4: the performance of a 7900 XTX for 2x less money and less fuel consumption?

AMD’s future GPU architecture, RDNA4, is back in the news. This time, via Moore’s Law is Dead (video no longer available), we learn a little more about what the series could offer. Clearly, you can count on performance equivalent to an RX 7900 XTX for half the price!

RDNA4: AMD focuses on performance/price ratio!

AMD RDNA4

As we learned earlier, with RDNA4, AMD is simply abandoning the high-end sector. With its hypothetical RX 8000, there would simply be no RX 8900 XTX, for example, and we could count on a range similar to the RX 5000 in their day.

The biggest GPU of this generation would be able to offer performance equivalent to the Navi 31 used in the 7900 XTX. However, it would do so on a smaller, less complex chip… All mounted on a simpler PCB. Of course, all this implies an equally simplified heatsink, probably without the use of a steam chamber. Thanks to 4 nm etching, we can also expect a lighter chip in terms of compute units. All of which means lower overall power consumption.

In short, AMD’s decision to leave the high-end sector is understandable. Indeed, while it’s good publicity for the company, the fact remains that this is not the sector where the bulk of sales take place. More often than not, the average consumer will invest his money in the mid-range series. AMD’s RX 7800 XT perfectly meets this demand. At NVIDIA, it’s the XX60 series that takes off the most.

Finally, according to some rumors, if the reds have ventured into the high-end, it’s thanks to the revenues generated during the mining crisis.
