No, Intel did not sell more GPUs than AMD

Several recent articles suggest that in the last quarter of 2022, Intel would have matched or even surpassed AMD in terms of GPU sales. This information seemed to confirm the good dynamics of the ARC cards that keep improving. However, these figures seemed to go beyond the ambitions that Intel had set for its first year. Legitimate doubts have been dispelled as Jon Peddie Research has just corrected the figures he had transmitted and admitted that the figures were wrong because of a bad methodology of calculation. Indeed, Intel’s figures in the JPRstudy were estimates based on their financial reports and obviously mixed different kind of products.

Intel GPUs not so high…But not so bad

Clearly, the first publication of the study did not represent the reality. Intel actually held “only” 6 % of GPU market share in Q4 2022. The error would be due to the fact that Intel itself added its data center GPUs, increasing the revenue of its graphics card business and misleading Jon Peddie’s analysts. In the end it seems that 60,000 Ponte Vecchio GPUs were added to the total by mistake, while only consumer GPUs are taken into account. These 60 000 GPUs probably correspond to the first batch of cards for the Aurora supercomputer.

Even if the total sales of GPUs in 2022 were divided by two compared to the previous year, Intel probably did not think it could take a 6% market share. This figure is still a satisfaction for the blue even if the volumes have clearly nothing to do with the last crazy years.
