For AMD too, the arrival of AI on the PC will change everything

During the traditional update on the company’s results for the third quarter of 2023, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su swept up a number of themes, from the server market to chips / GPUs. In the midst of these topics, the PC market was mentioned. And just like Intel a while ago, Lisa Su declared that the PC market was likely to be profoundly disrupted by the arrival of Artificial Intelligence at the heart of desktop PCs. Once again, the analysis seems to be very clearly in line with what Pat Gelsinger has previously stated. It would all hinge on the new version of Windows and the coupling of PC chips with a local capacity to accelerate AI processing.

AI - IA PC AMD

All these statements are relatively nebulous, but the main idea remains the same as Intel’s: the arrival of AI in the next Windows will revolutionize the user experience and thus profoundly revitalize the PC market. According to Linn Huang, Vice President of Research at IDC, AI-enabled computers could enable unprecedented personalization of the user experience, while guaranteeing data privacy and sovereignty.

Lisa Su’s words on the future of the PC:

What excites me most about PCs is actually AI PC. I think the AI PC opportunity is an opportunity to redefine what PCs are in terms of being a productivity tool and really operating on user data.

So I think we’re at the beginning of a wave. We’re investing heavily in Ryzen AI and the opportunity to really expand the AI capabilities of PCs in the future. And I think that’s where the conversation is going to be. It’s going to be less about the instructions you use and more about the experience you deliver to customers.

And from that point of view, I think we have a very exciting portfolio in which I feel comfortable over the next couple of years. (Lisa Su – CEO AMD Q3 2023 Earnings call)
