Steam Deck supports 61.44 TB SSDs!

The Steam Deck is a surprisingly versatile machine. As we’ve seen, it’s even used in theaters of war to pilot military drones. However, it’s a console capable of handling a huge storage capacity: 61.44 TB to be precise!

Clearly, the operation carried out here is not intended for everyday use, no, it’s for the exploit that it was done. What’s more, the resulting DIY operation is anything but practical, since the console has to be connected to an ATX power supply – in short, a happy mess.

But to keep things simple, a Solidigm P5336 61.44TB SSD was connected to the console. To achieve this, the SSD was mounted in an Icy Dock M.2 to U.2 adapter. The adapter is then connected to an ATX power supply to provide power to the SSD, which, as a reminder, consumes more power than the console itself. Then it’s on, and it works.

Tests have been carried out to see the speeds achieved. In this case, we’re talking about 3.6 GB/s in read mode versus 2.8 GB/s in write mode. As a reminder, the SSD, on paper, achieves 7 GB/s for reading and 3.3 GB/s for writing. The reason for such limited speeds is the console’s PCIe 3.0 interface.

As a reminder, in practice, Steam Deck is limited to 2TB SSDs. This is due to the M.2 2230 format, whose capacities do not exceed 2000 GB.
