S90 & S4000, two new GPU in preparation at Moore Threads

As you probably know, China produces its own graphics cards. Moore Threads currently has several references in its catalog. It offers the S80 and S70 for the consumer sector, and the S3000 and S2000 for the datacenter/server sector… But things are about to change, as the S4000 and S90 are said to be in the pipeline!

S90 & S4000: two new home-made Chinese boards in the works from Moore Threads!

Of course, we still don’t know much about these upcoming boards, except that the S90 is intended for the gaming sector. As for the S4000, it will be destined for data centers, which is what the S3000 and S2000 were already doing.

The question now is what we’ll be dealing with. Obviously, we’ll have to rely on a new architecture which, we hope, will be more powerful… But above all, less out of step with the times. As a reminder, current cards did not support tessellation or DirectX 11 when they were launched.

For the time being, only the Device IDs are known: 0301 and 0323, which means that the cards do exist. The question remains as to their condition.

The other major constraint will concern mass production, since Moore Threads is on the American radar. In other words, the company won’t be able to have its chips produced at TSMC, since access to American technologies is limited. The same applies to Intel and Samsung foundries.

Clearly, only SMIC would be able to produce these GPUs. But once again, the question is whether they will have enough lines available. As a reminder, SMIC produces Huawei’s Kirin chips in particular.
