A few hours ago we relayed a number of rumours suggesting that AMD was dropping the 8GB version of the RX 9060 XT. This decision was justified in view of the frosty reception of the 8GB version of Nvidia’s RTX 5060 Ti. However, after a week of speculation, it now seems certain that the RX 9060 XT will be available in an 8GB version. Several sources, including major distributors, confirm that the 8GB and 16GB versions will be released on the same day. However, AMD seems to be following in Nvidia’s footsteps, and the 8GB versions will not necessarily be sold under the same conditions as the 16GB versions.
RX 9060 XT 8GB: no cancellation, but a famously low availability?
Yet this possible cancellation might seem logical in view of what’s been happening at Nvidia. We’re thinking in particular of the reactions to the release and performance of the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB. Tests of the RTX 5060 Ti, published in April, revealed that the 8GB version was underwhelming. Nvidia and its partner brands simply decided not to offer any cards to testers. Those who were able to get their hands on a copy were able to observe much lower performance compared to the 16GB version (the 8GB RTX 5060 Ti was reportedly 30-40% slower than its 16GB sibling). The Reds could therefore adopt a strategy similar to that of their competitor, with an 8GB version that is difficult to obtain.
Objectively, with an announcement expected a little before Computex, it seemed unlikely that AMD would stop supplying or cancel a product before the launch. Quite simply because AMD’s partners have probably already manufactured and stocked it. On the other hand, it is certain that the partner brands will make adjustments according to demand and market reception. It is therefore more than likely that the 16GB version of the Radeon RX 9060 XT will be much more available than the 8GB version.
