It’s a never-ending story for Nvidia and its RTX 50s. Some users have had the misfortune to experience black screen and reboot problems when using RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti graphics cards with certain older generation motherboards (potentially PCie 4.0). Users of these GPUs can now update their firmware to resolve these issues.
Firmware fix: RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti affected
This patch comes less than a week after the launch of the Greens RTX 5060 graphics card, but also affects the RTX 5060 Ti. Nvidia has released a series of workarounds that will allow users of the affected GPUs to reboot their systems and update their graphics cards. The arrival of this firmware patch at a time when the small RTX 5060 was launched without prior ‘free’ testing sheds further light on the potential consequences of Nvidia’s practices.
Nvidia’s official communication on the methodology to be applied:
NVIDIA GPU UEFI firmware update tool for the RTX 5060 series
To ensure compatibility with certain motherboard SBIOS, an NVIDIA GPU firmware update may be required. Without this update, GeForce RTX 5060 cards on some older motherboards may display blank screens on reboot. This update should only be applied if blank screens appear on reboot.

The NVIDIA GPU Firmware Update Tool will detect if the firmware update is required and, if necessary, give the user the option to update.
If you are currently experiencing a blank screen on reboot, try one of the following workarounds to run the tool:
– Completely shut down your system before booting
– Make sure you are using the latest SBIOS from your motherboard supplier
– Make sure you are in UEFI boot mode and not Legacy/CSM
– Boot using an alternative graphics source (secondary card or integrated graphics card)
– After powering up your system, wait for your operating system to load with the graphics driver installed
Once the tool has been downloaded, run it and follow the on-screen instructions. Make sure that all applications are closed before you run it and that there are no operating system updates running in the background.
If you are experiencing problems with Legacy/CSM boot mode and your motherboard does not support UEFI boot mode, please contact your graphics card manufacturer’s customer service department for a Legacy VBIOS update.
