Intel allows pre-builds with Core i9 14900KS delid!

Even though we haven’t had the chance to test it yet, the Core i9 14900KS proves to be particularly demanding. In fact, to reach the 6.2 GHz boost it promises, you’ll have to contend with high power consumption and heating. So much so, in fact, that some have reported consumptions of over 400W!

In theory, to get the maximum performance from your processor, you need to delid it. This allows much lower temperatures. However, this will void your warranty… Except that…

Intel authorizes the sale of 14900KS delid for certain assemblers!

Core i9 14900KS

Certain high-volume assemblers such as Maingear have received Intel’s authorization to resell machines incorporating this processor, but delidalised as standard. As you can see, the extra cost involved in this operation is considerable: $200. And yes, we’re talking here about machines benefiting from a custom watercooling system.

However, to install direct-die cooling, specific components are required, since CPUs are lower without IHS. What’s more, the design of the components is much finer, since without protection, too much clamping pressure and the CPU risks breaking. Waterblocks can therefore become more expensive.

As far as the warranty is concerned, you’re covered in the event of a problem with your processor. However, not all assemblers/vendors offer this coverage. You’ll need to check the terms and conditions of sale to find out.
