Following the launch of pre-orders and the official announcement of prices, new information about GTA 6 confirms the shift currently taking place in the video game industry. Despite statements made just a few hours ago claiming that a “physical” version (i.e., on a medium such as DVD) of the game was indeed scheduled for late 2026, a source cited by The Hollywood Reporter has come forward to contradict this entirely. It is explained that Take-Two Interactive’s statements were misinterpreted.
The Digitalization of Video Games: GTA 6 Confirms the Trend
In fact, there are “absolutely no plans” to release GTA 6 on physical media. So let’s get back to reality: for those who like to collect games, you’ll have to rely solely on a download code included in a video game case.

Rockstar’s decision to offer GTA VI exclusively in digital format is a death knell for the physical media industry. Our thoughts naturally turn to collectors, but also (and especially) to brick-and-mortar stores. For there’s no doubt that the rest of the industry will amplify a trend that’s already well underway and, unfortunately, deliver the final blow to these businesses. By the same token, it’s also a near-fatal blow to the used game market.
We’ve all seen this trend play out before in the music and DVD industries. When it comes to video games, let’s also take a closer look at the economic reasons behind this shift. For years, the costs of developing a game have been steadily rising.
Today, a study gives us an idea of where the money goes when you buy a game at a physical store. On a price of €80 or $80, the store takes a margin of between 20% and 30%. The publisher, meanwhile, allocates between 5 and 6% to the physical medium.
The shift to digital is therefore inevitable. The future of the video game industry will be dominated by both digital purchases and subscription models, which will likely include downloads and cloud access. This type of distribution is clearly much more profitable for publishers. For Rockstar, the challenge lies in recouping a substantial investment—estimated by analysts at between $1 billion and $1.5 billion—dedicated to this video game following a 13-year development period.
The die is cast, and even the box containing the download code is really just a transitional phase.
