[CES2025] AMD unveils the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT

Following the official announcement of the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D processors, AMD has unveiled the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards for Q1, i.e. for the first quarter of 2025. The arrival of these new graphics cards will coincide with the availability of the AMD RDNA 4 architecture, as announced by Lisa SU. The RDNA 4 chips will be manufactured by TSMC using a 4nm process.

AMD will also be offering FSR 4, the FidelityFX Super Resolution 4, which will only be compatible with this new generation of graphics cards, i.e. initially the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. One of the captures reveals several custom models offered by AMD’s partners, most of which feature a three-fan cooling system. The power connector should remain unchanged, i.e. the ‘traditional’ 8-pin.

Simplified card reference :

AMD has made the logical decision to change the reference number for this new generation of graphics cards, to make it easier to identify NVIDIA’s direct competitor. Without yet knowing the performance of the next NVIDIA RTX 5000, AMD is offering a slide to position its two new RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards.

This new 9070 series will be positioned opposite NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 Super and AMD’s top-of-the-range, previous-generation RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 GRE. The RX 7900 XTX should therefore remain the best-performing model in the AMD range, even though it will not benefit from FSR4.

This latest slide also highlights the imminent arrival of a 9060 series, most likely including an RX 9060 and an RX 9060 XT. AMD seems to have decided, for the time being, not to take an interest in the very top end of the market, and to leave the field open to NVIDIA, with an RTX 5090, which looks, on paper, monstrous.
