AMD RX5600 XT with 16 GB RAM: what does it mean?

The Radeon RX 5600 XT with 16 GB memory boosts performance by 29%. This card was launched in 2018 with 6 GB GDDR6 memory at 14 Gbit/s on a 192-bit memory interface. The card is scaled down from the 7 nm ” Navi 10 ” silicon that powers the RX 5700 series, enabling 36 out of 40 compute units (the same number as the RX 5700). On the other hand, the memory bus is truncated from 192 bits wired to 6 GB of memory (and therefore 25% lower memory bandwidth).

amd rx5600 xtWhat process is used here?

Paulo Gomes and Ronaldo Buassali have developed the daring Radeon RX 5600 XT memory module. This involves not only increasing memory size from 6 GB to 16 GB, but also expanding the memory bus from 192 bits to 256 bits. The RX 5600 XT is based on the same “Navi 10” GPU as the RX 5700. Custom graphics cards tend to reuse PCB designs from the RX 5700 series, and feature two vacant memory buffers that are sometimes exposed.

amd rx5600 xtSteps to mod realization

  • Replace the six 8 Gbit GDDR6 memory chips with eight 16 Gbit ones
  • Add the SMD and VRM electrical components required for the two additional memory chips
  • Give the board a modified BIOS that will enable it to play with the new memory configuration.

The ” Navi 10 ” silicon also powers some Radeon Pro graphics cards with 16 GB of memory. They use 16 GB memory chips, which could be the starting point for the BIOS mod.

The AMD RX5600 XT 16 GB: was it useful or not?

The mod was a success and the GPU was able to handle 16 GB of memory. This means it can benefit from a larger memory bus. The result of the memory mod and GPU overclocking is a massive 29% performance gain in tests with ” Unigine Superposition “. The resulting card is essentially a Radeon RX 5700 with 16 GB!
