A disappointing RX 8800 XT?

With the launch just around the corner, rumours about the RX 8800 XT are making the rounds. Indeed, on the Chiphell forum, user zhangzhonghao gave us some interesting information about AMD’s future graphics card. However, while the initial news was interesting, Techepiphany, known for its compilations of sales figures on MindFacrtory in particular, dampened expectations.

RX 8800 XT: not as powerful as the first rumours suggested!

RDNA 4If the first rumours were anything to go by, the 8800 XT seemed to be a real monster. In fact, we could expect performance similar to that of an RTX 4080(S) in terms of rasterisation, while offering 45% better ray tracing capabilities. Finally, this model seemed genuinely efficient, with a TDP of 220W reported by Seasonic’s PSU Calculator.

But it would appear that the reality is quite different, as TechEpiphany indicates in one of its publications on X:

“Lol, these rumours about the AMD Radeon RX 8800 XT…

People are going to be disappointed”

Clearly, the initial rumours were a little too optimistic, if we’re to believe what he’s telling us here. On the other hand, our colleagues at El Chapuzas Informatico estimate the card’s performance to be on a par with the RX 7900 GRE, or even slightly better, without even coming close to rivalling the RX 7900 XT. To arrive at this conclusion, they simply base themselves on the generational gains generally seen when moving from one series to another, in this case moving from the RX 6800 XT to the RX 7800 XT, i.e. around 5 to 6% better.

This seems more reasonable, given that the difference in performance between a 7800 XT and a 7900 XTX is much greater. It’s between 15% and 25% in 1080p and up to 35% in UHD.

In short, as always, rumours should be taken with a grain of salt. What is true one day can change completely the next, especially with products that have not yet been launched.
