During our visit to Computex 2025, we were able to discover Seasonic’ s forthcoming power supplies with some interesting new technologies. The one that immediately caught our eye was undoubtedly OptiGuard, a potential solution to the problems of the 12V-2×6 connector. Just a quick reminder of the situation for the distracted: the latest generation graphics cards have an unbalanced power consumption that can cause the cable to overheat due to an increase in resistance. In the worst case, when the connections between the cable and the GPU/power supply are not perfect, this can lead to hot spots that can melt the connector or the 12V-2×6 cable. You’ve all seen how this can lead to other disasters.
Seasonic wants to put an end to 12V-2×6 worries
The brand has therefore decided to monitor the current flowing through each of the six 12 V pins, while measuring the temperatures on each side of the connector. This data is then transmitted to a chip integrated into the power supply unit, whose function is to detect the appearance of any anomaly. When a problem is detected, the PSU sends an alarm to inform the user. However, if the overload persists, the PSU will force a shutdown, apparently cutting off the power supply completely. This approach creates a closed-loop safety system, tackling in real time both the symptom (overheating of the cables) and its root cause (uneven load distribution). Obviously, the sudden shutdown of the PC is unpleasant, but it’s the lesser evil. However, Seasonic is planning a second version of its OptiGuard, which links the power supply unit to the motherboard and enables a cleaner shutdown controlled by the operating system.
Seasonic will be incorporating this technology into its next-generation Prime PSUs. Production of this new range incorporating these technologies is scheduled for this year, with market availability planned for the first quarter of 2026.
