The current period is clearly gloomy for the computer components market. As we have seen, sales of graphics cards, motherboards and hard disks are struggling. However, if there is one sector that should do well, it is the SSD sector. Yole Group predicts an annual growth of 15% per year until 2028!
The SSD market should have a bright future!
As you might expect, the year 2023 is going to be quite special due to the current geopolitical and financial context. This is why we do not have precise estimates in terms of revenues or units shipped in this sector for this year. However, despite a drop in demand of around 14% in 2022 compared to 2021, the SSD market looks set to flourish… Especially in the enterprise sector. The latter becoming more and more greedy in fast storage.
Yole estimates that between 2022 and 2028, the market will weigh between $29 billion and $67 billion. In terms of number of units, we will go from 352 million in 2022 to 472 million in 2028.
Last year, in 2022, out of the 352 million SSDs shipped, about 55 million were for businesses and 297 million for the public sector. And of those 55 million, we had 30 that were PCIe (about 30%). On the customer side, the share of PCIe models was 85%, which is expected to increase to 96% by 2028.
Now, it is necessary to know that the fast products will be intended especially for the world of the company. The group estimates that 69% of business models will be in PCIe 5.0 against only 12% for the public sector in 2028. The same goes for PCIe 6.0 models: 16% in enterprises against 3% for the customer sector in 2028. Eventually, 85% of users in the consumer sector will be running PCIe 4.0 models.
