AMD FSR 3: a big jump in 4K

At the launch of the RX 7900 cards, AMD briefly mentioned FSR 3, the successor to its AI-based resolution scaling technique. Details are scarce for a solution that has to compete with Nvidia’s excellent DLSS 3. During the event dedicated to the new Radeon we could paradoxically see many games running with FSR 2.

AMD FSR 3: a very big update?

But the promises are big and it is said that the third generation of FSR could offer double the 4K frame rates of its predecessor using a feature called Fluid Motion Frames…A name that sounds strangely like the techno used on the RTX 40 from Nvidia. Nvidia’s Frame Generation uses proprietary optical flow gas pedals to create new frames between the frames rendered by DLSS…But on this subject we touch a paradox at AMD. Indeed team red have still mentioned several times the openness of their FSR technology to run on all modern GPUs of all brands. However, a big difference with DLSS concerns the machine learning used by Nvidia and facilitated by Tensor Cores. In the queries about the RX 7900, we can thus point to the AI gas pedals that are supposed to improve performance. In the case of the new Radeon, AMD was careful not to specify if they could be exploited by the FSR like the Tensor Cores of Nvidia…

The FSR update will arrive in 2023 and it is not impossible that this Fluid Motion Frames technology requires a particular hardware, only present on the RX 7900.
