In June 2025, we reached a crossroads, the moment when Windows 11 finally took the lead over Windows 10. Indeed, from that date onwards, Microsoft’s latest system became the most widely used OS. However, things are changing, as Windows 10 has been regaining market share in recent months. Microsoft has not been able to win people over with W11.
Since October 2025, Windows 10 has been regaining market share!
Admittedly, in June 2025, Windows 11 became Microsoft’s most popular system, with W10’s share declining from August to October 2025. But since then, the system has been regaining market share. It’s nothing spectacular, but the gap between the old and current generations of Microsoft systems is narrowing. Currently, according to Statcounter, W11 has a 50.73% market share compared to 44.68% for W10. If this trend and pace continue, we could see Microsoft’s older system regain the upper hand in two or three months.
Another interesting point is that Windows 7 is also regaining ground, even though support for the system was discontinued more than five years ago. At the moment, it has a 3.92% market share, which is still significant given its age. In contrast, the more recent Windows 8 accounts for less than 1% of the market share when Windows 8 (0.17%) and Windows 8.1 (0.16%) are taken into account.
In short, the site does not explain this resurgence of W10, but it is not impossible that recent problematic updates have finally convinced some users who were reluctant to return to 10. Recently, it must be said that the January security updates caused quite a few problems. These included black screens, hibernation or sleep mode no longer working, and even PCs refusing to boot. In short, when you know that you can enjoy an extra year of Windows 10 support with a simple tweak, why not take advantage of it?
