Memory prices have literally skyrocketed in recent months… Although there was a slight easing at the end of February. However, prices remain too high and are seriously affecting machine manufacturers’ margins. An analysis firm indicates that entry-level PCs could disappear by 2028, as this segment was deemed insufficiently profitable!
Entry-levelPCs could disappear within a few years!
When we talk about entry-level PCs, we are referring to the price segment below $500. According to the analysis firm, the rise in memory costs is eating into manufacturers’ margins. To put it simply, before the price explosion, memory accounted for 16% of the total manufacturing cost and could soon reach 23%. Add to that an increase in SSDs and graphics cards. All of this makes it economically unviable to offer entry-level machines.
The firm has therefore concluded that the entry-level PC sector could disappear by 2028… particularly in the laptop sector. Currently, at Top Achat, the cheapest laptop sells for €630 and has 16 GB ofDDR4 and a 512 GBSSD.
By the end of the year, it is estimated that storage and RAM costs will have increased by 130%. This increase will be reflected in the final price of devices, which will be around 17% more expensive than those sold in 2025. This implies a slowdown in the PC market. The firm anticipates a 10.4% decline in global shipments in 2026 compared to 2025. Paradoxically, however, it is not impossible that companies will benefit from this, as price increases could offset the decline in demand. They could even come out ahead by seeing their revenues grow. On the other hand, small companies specializing in entry-level products could well disappear.
