Ouch, ouch, ouch… Reports of RTX 5090s with damaged connectors continue to multiply. Yesterday, we had the case of a Zotac model whose plug melted off. This time, it’s an MSI model whose adapter has fused with the card. Quite simply, it’s impossible to remove it without ripping everything out!
RTX 5090: the 12V-2×6 adapter merges with the graphics card!
Once again, we find a problem with the card’s power supply socket. This time, what tipped off the user was the fact that his card was no longer randomly detected by Windows under normal loads, so imagine in a video game. The user then inspected his PC and noticed that the power connector showed burn marks. He then set about unplugging his card, but… The adapter refused to come in, merging with the graphics card.
So, if this happens to you, you’d better not force it, or you’ll tear everything out. This would potentially turn a perfectly legitimate problem into a terrible user error, which would invalidate your service request. That’s what he was advised to do on Reddit: don’t touch anything.
In short, the story is well known: a problem of load distribution between the pins of the cable, one strand takes all the intensity, heats up and melts. This is what Der8auer revealed in a previous demonstration. Worst of all, there are no real protection mechanisms on the cards to prevent this problem.
Well, clearly, the person to whom this happened must now be insensitive to RTX 5090s. In addition to this incident, Unhappy-War6154, has already had a card that made artifacts. His second card had its 12V-2×6 melt down, so the results weren’t very satisfactory.
