The remake of Silent Hill 2 was recently released on PC on October 8. However, it seems that the game is struggling to run properly on AMD cards, to the extent that the RX 7900 GRE barely reaches 60 FPS in 1080p! We take a look at the situation based on the article from our colleagues at TechpowerUp!
Silent Hill 2 and the RX 7000, it’s complicated!
In terms of VRAM consumption, the title isn’t particularly greedy, with a total of 10.4 GB of memory consumed in Epic in UHD compared with 10.2 GB when ray tracing is activated. At low settings, the title uses just 8.7 GB of memory, again in UHD. In short, with an 8GB card, you won’t have your memory saturated in 1080p, while 12GB will suffice in most scenarios.
In terms of performance, it’s clearly complicated, as you can see. In 1440p, epic settings, but without ray tracing, AMD cards are completely at a loss. In fact, an RX 7900 XTX, the top of the Reds range, displays just 56 FPS compared with 48.1 FPS for the RX 7900 XT. The entry-level RX 7600 (XT) runs at just over 20 FPS, which is clearly not playable. In fact, with these cards, even 1080p is a stretch. On the mid-range, with the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT, don’t expect much more than 30 and 40 FPS respectively.
By contrast, NVIDIA cards fare better, with the RTX 3080 achieving over 60 FPS in 1080p, while the RTX 4070 Ti/3090 Ti reach that limit in 1440p. In UHD, even the RTX 4090 doesn’t reach 60 FPS.
In short, this is clearly a game where you’ll need to activate the upscallers (DLSS/FSR) to get decent performance… Well, to reach at least 60 FPS. If we look at pure rasterisation , NVIDIA cards seem to be much more at ease than RADEON ones, despite their rather controlled memory consumption.
