Clearly, the RX 9070 GRE is a real card, and images of PowerColor’s versions have surfaced on the Net. Apparently, a colleague has managed to get hold of promo photos of the RX 9070 GRE Reaper and Red Devil. However, these don’t show any major visual changes compared to the RX 9070 XT and non-XT of the same name. Could this be a case of recycling?
RX 9070 GRE Reaper and Red Devil: no convincing visual changes!
What the photos of the cards highlight is that PowerColor is reusing the same design and the same cooling systems for its RX 9070 GRE. As you can see, the Reaper would feature a simple heatsink with three fans and a sleek, no-frills black shell. Clearly, this is the brand’s MSRP model.
In contrast, we have the Red Devil version, which represents the brand’s top end. Here, the heatsink is more elaborate. Although still featuring three fans, the casing has red inserts and more pronounced shapes. At the rear, there’s a luminous red diffuser and a backplate with a Red Devil logo, also illuminated in red… If there’s no change from the non-GRE models at least. It’s an imposing model, over 30 cm long and over 2 slots thick.
Finally, the packaging highlights the card name and a memory capacity of 12 GB. In itself, it’s not unusual for brands to re-exploit their designs from one series to the next… We remember the RX 7900 GRE in particular, which used heatsinks and PCBs from the RX 7900 XT(X). This seems to be the case again here, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves either, we might be surprised.
In the meantime, we hear of a serious reduction in the cards’ power requirements. The Red Devil would go from three 8-pin PCIe to two, while a 650W power supply would be recommended. In short, we’ll have to keep an eye on this, especially as the latest news is that the card has been pushed back to the end of the year, but we’ll have to take that with a grain of salt too.
