Paulo Gomes upgrades a GTX 970 to 7GB of VRAM!

The GTX 970, so many memories … We all remember the controversy that surrounded this card in its day. Yes, remember, this model was marketed as a 4GB card, which was physically true, but not all the memory worked in the same way. Of the 4 GB, 3.5 GB ran at full speed, while the rest was slower. The result was crashes and weird things happening when a game saturated the card’s memory. Anyway, the point is that modder Paulo Gomes modified the card to double its memory capacity. Even after 11 years of existence, the card is still the talk of the town!

GTX 970 and how about doubling its memory capacity?

GTX 970 8 GoIf you’re reading this, you probably know the man. Paulo Gomes is a Brazilian who specialises in modding graphics cards. He often works on the memory part of cards, increasing their VRAM capacity. In particular, he made a name for himself by doubling the memory capacity of an RTX 3070, giving the card a new lease of life.

Now he’s done it again with an 11-year-old GTX 970, doubling its usable memory capacity. This gives us 7 GB that the card can use at full speed because of this lousy memory. To boost the amount of VRAM, there’s no secret: you need to get your hands dirty and replace the 512 MB chips with 1 GB chips.

Once he made sure everything was working properly, a quick test was made on the Unigine Superposition 8K and the score fell: 1500 pts. Of course, a first run was carried out with the card in its default configuration and it scored 800 pts, a gain of 87.5%! So, in addition to memory capacity, speed was also up: 7 Gbps compared with 8 Gbps. Of course, all this contributed to improving the scores!
