MSI responds to recall of RTX 5090 for ‘fire hazard’

A few days ago, we learned that a retailer had initiated a graphics card recall campaign. This involved RTX 5090 from MSI, who took it very badly indeed. At the same time, the reason for the campaign, which was as serious as it was short-lived, mentioned the risk of the cards catching fire. In short, the brand with the dragon speaks out in a scathing press release!

To cut a long story short, the brand simply states that no such recall campaign of any kind has ever been initiated. The brand therefore denies any information from the retailer. What’s more, the brand goes even further, stating that the merchant, UW GAME SPECIALIST, is not even one of the brand’s distribution channel partners. MSI therefore does not work directly with them, and in its press release, the company lists authorized resellers. In short, we assume that the store must have turned to some kind of central purchasing agency to source branded cards for resale.

Even more seriously, MSI has indicated that it reserves the right to take legal action against the store. The reason given is defamation, with MSI believing that the false recall campaign is damaging to the company’s image. It remains to be seen whether the company will actually take legal action against the retailer, or whether this is just a warning shot aimed at discouraging other retailers from initiating recall procedures without the brand’s approval.

In short, if it’s a communication error, it’s likely to cost the store dearly. On the one hand, it risks losing all credibility, and on the other, we can imagine that MSI no longer wants to see its hardware featured in the merchant’s catalog. Moral: think carefully before you launch into this kind of procedure, and consider the possible consequences.
