Intel has announced that it has discovered the source of the instability problems affecting its processors. As a reminder, the blues have been in turmoil for some time now. Indeed, the 13th and 14th generation processors, more specifically the Core i9s, have been suffering from instabilities. These instabilities, when the CPU is heavily loaded, result in crashes, desktop rollbacks and even blue screens. A situation that has a negative impact on the brand’s reputation.
Naturally, the company has not been idle, and has attempted to roll out a patch, to no avail. We recently learned that the problem also affected server platforms and laptops.
Intel is investigating: it’s another microcode problem!
In a press release, the blue brand announces that it has found the cause of the problem. Clearly, it stems from a problem with the microcode algorithm. The latter sends excessive voltage requests to the processor, which ultimately leads to the problems we all know about.
Now that the problem has been identified, we can look forward to a definitive fix. The only thing is, we’ll have to be patient, as it’s due to be rolled out in mid-August. Of course, this time it’s important not to miss a trick. Indeed, a few weeks ago, the brand had already proposed a patch in connection with eTVB, which apparently alleviated the problem without resolving it completely.
To be continued below, the brand’s press release:
“Based on extensive analysis of Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors returned to us due to instability issues, we have determined that elevated operating voltage is causing instability issues in some 13th/14th Gen desktop processors. Our analysis of returned processors confirms that the elevated operating voltage is stemming from a microcode algorithm resulting in incorrect voltage requests to the processor.
Intel is delivering a microcode patch which addresses the root cause of exposure to elevated voltages. We are continuing validation to ensure that scenarios of instability reported to Intel regarding its Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors are addressed. Intel is currently targeting mid-August for patch release to partners following full validation.
Intel is committed to making this right with our customers, and we continue asking any customers currently experiencing instability issues on their Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors reach out to Intel Customer Support for further assistance.”
