It’s a subject that’ s already been broached, but it would appear that Micron wants to halt production of DDR4 memory chips. The reason remains the same: demand is still high, but Chinese manufacturers are imposing serious competition. For this reason, the American manufacturer’s production will gradually decrease until it comes to a complete halt.
DDR4: Micron wants to stop production!
We’ve learned that the company wants to put an end to its production of DDR4 memory chips due to competitive pressures from China. It has to be said that certain Chinese companies have become specialists in the production of low-cost memory. Admittedly, the quality of these chips is not as high as that of brands such as Micron, Sk Hynix or Samsung, but they are affordable enough to apply constant pressure that discourages incumbent producers. As a result, the DRAM trio now prefers to concentrate on newer products that Chinese companies can’t yet produce. These include DDR5, which is right up there with the times. Intel and AMD use this type of memory on their LGA-1851 and AM5 platforms. However, demand for DDR4 is still high, and not everyone has yet made the transition to these new platforms… Especially with AMD launching a Ryzen 5 5500X3D. In short, this production stoppage could lead to higher memory prices. Indeed, while Chinese brands sell at low prices, they don’t have the same production capacity as Samsung, SK Hynix or Micron. And if demand remains strong, you know what happens: prices go up. Even so, we’re talking about a bill that could exceed that of DDR5 modules. This time, things seem to be set in stone: DDR4 is being phased out by the three DRAM giants.
