For some months now, power supply brands have been integrating monitoring and protection mechanisms for 12V-2×6 connectors. We’ve seen this with ASRock and its cables with thermal probe. MSI also announced its SafeGuard+GPU, for example. Other mechanisms have long been available, such as Thermal Grizzly’s WireView, while ASUS offers reinforced cables. Today we learn that Corsair is working on its own pin monitoring technology.
Corsair wants to monitor the 12V-2×6 pins of its power supplies!
Towards a system similar to MSI?
On Reddit, the account of jonnyGURUgerow indicates that Corsair is preparing a new series of power supplies. The latter should feature a pin monitoring mechanism for the 12V-2×6 connector, following the example of MSI, for example. As for how this will work, we can only speculate. But we can imagine it being integrated into iCUE, with an interface that provides real-time information on the voltages, powers and current values flowing through each pin of the cable. Then, if these values are exceeded, we can imagine a warning system, or even an automatic shutdown of the PC to prevent any damage. Of course, to take advantage of this, you’ll need to equip yourself with specific blocks.
It’s up to manufacturers to come up with solutions:
However, this does not solve the fundamental problem of the 12V-2×6 connector. In fact, what causes these fires is the lack of power distribution at pin level. As we’ve seen, certain strands of the cable are exposed to high currents, while the other strands remain virtually unaffected. As a result, power supply manufacturers have to come up with solutions to prevent their graphics cards from going up in smoke. And all this adds to the cost of after-sales service at NVIDIA.
