AM4 & AM5 : different sockets but same fixing

0

As you know, the next AMD chipset will host a new socket: AM5. This one is completely different from the AM4 socket. Bye bye the PGA socket (Pin Grid Array) in which you used to put your processor and from now on it will host a LGA socket (Land Grid Array). This socket will resemble those already present for years on Intel motherboards. Why this change? Simply because of the higher number of pins on the next Ryzen 7000 (1718). No more processors sticking to the base of your cooling system during disassembly. socket-AM5-entraxe-LGA-1718-overclocking-1 Even if the socket is different, AMD has decided to keep the distance between the fixing holes. The idea is to allow future buyers to keep their cooling system. Several brands have already announced the compatibility of their cooling system as Alphacool. Now some manufacturers confirm the compatibility but are more nuanced as the American manufacturer Optimus.

Indeed, if on the Intel side, the DIE is centered on the PCB, it is not at all the case for AMD. It will therefore be interesting to see how the cooling systems will behave with this new generation of processors on socket AM5.
